The Little Wins That Make a Difference

As I sit here in front of my computer on a cold Friday morning, waiting for my support worker to arrive, I can’t help but feel completely exhausted. I’ve also been feeling quite unwell, which certainly hasn’t helped. Yesterday afternoon I ended up having a few hours’ sleep, but once again I found myself awake throughout the entire night.

This ongoing sleep cycle is becoming increasingly frustrating. It feels like I’m constantly chasing sleep rather than actually getting any meaningful rest. With everything else I already have going on with my health, it’s the last thing I need. I know that poor sleep can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing, and it’s something I really need to get under control before it starts causing even more problems.

This morning’s first priority is my medication. My support worker is heading to the chemist to collect one of my amputee medications along with my heart tablets. I had almost run out of one prescription and completely finished the other last night, so thankfully we’re getting them replaced before it becomes a bigger issue.

Once the medication has been sorted, the next stop will be Woolworths to collect my online grocery order. After that, we’ll head home so my support worker can prepare my weekly meal.

This week’s choice is a chicken salad. It’s been a little while since I’ve had one, and I’ve really been craving it. There’s something about a fresh chicken salad with French dressing that always hits the spot. It’s healthy, filling, and surprisingly affordable, making it a great option for the week ahead.

If the weather holds up, I’m feeling a little better, and we have enough time after everything else is finished, we might make a quick trip to the café at the Umina Beach Surf Club. I’m thinking a mango and banana smoothie would be a nice treat to finish the morning.

Like many people at the moment, I’m keeping a close eye on my budget. Electricity and internet costs continue to climb, and it’s becoming difficult to justify staying with my current providers. Over the next week or two, I’ll be comparing other companies to see what better deals are available. I’ll also be requesting refunds for the account credits I still have so I can transfer those funds across to new providers. From what I’ve already seen, I should be able to get the same NBN plan I’m currently using for a significantly lower monthly price.

While my support worker is busy preparing lunch, I’ll probably spend some time playing Diablo IV. I’ve been really enjoying Season 14, and I think Blizzard has done an excellent job with this season. It’s easily one of the most enjoyable updates the game has had in quite some time.

There was also some unexpected good news this morning. Just before I was about to finish writing this post, my support worker returned from the chemist with my medications and my PBS Safety Net card. I’ve already reached the PBS Safety Net threshold for the year, which means that until 31 December 2026, most of my PBS medications will now be supplied free of charge. Considering the number of medications I take each month, that’s going to make a noticeable difference to my ongoing medical expenses. I will still need to pay the applicable concession surcharge on a couple of my monthly medications, including my stronger pain relief and anxiety medication, but overall it’s a welcome financial relief.

For now, we’re simply waiting for Woolworths to send the notification that my grocery order is ready for collection. Once that arrives, my support worker will head over to pick it up, and then we’ll get on with the rest of the day.

Until then, I think it’s time to relax for a little while and lose myself in Diablo IV.
