I don’t usually post political topics. But I believe this is one I need to say something about.
Member of Parliament Dr Helen Haines, 65, was run down by a member of her community in Wangaratta, outside her local office, while at the back of her vehicle. She was hit up to 3 timees and trapped under her vehicle. She was transported to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne via helicopter. She has lost a leg as a result of this crime and is still in a critical condition.
There is no excuse for political violence like this within Australia, under any circumstances.
I will update more on Helen’s condition as it comes to hand. I will update via replies to this topic.
Thoughts go out to Helen, her family, friends and community at this difficult time.
Update:
Brendan Nugent has been charged with several offences following the alleged ramming of federal MP Helen Haines in Wangaratta. He is accused of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a public official.
The 43-year-old man, who is from Tarrawingee, was detained at the scene of the incident and is scheduled to appear in the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court. Detectives from the Security Investigation Unit are leading the charge, while a joint counter-terrorism team has also been activated to investigate the circumstances and potential motives behind the attack.
